To every girl who has ever said, or even thought, “I’m not pretty enough to cosplay”

I want you to take a look at these photos. Side by side. This is the same girl. One is fresh out of the shower and ready for bed. The other is wearing makeup, a wig, and having her picture taken by a photographer.

It’s amazing how much you DON’T see of all those great cosplayers who are idolized. You see their cosplay pictures and are envious that you aren’t that pretty. But reality is, when we go out in cosplay there is a lot of makeup and wig work involved. I have friends that don’t recognize me outside of cosplay.

I don’t want young girls to look at cosplayers and think, “I can never look at that.” Because cosplay is what made me feel beautiful. I want you to look at yourself and say, “They’re just like me when they aren’t in costume. We’re all human, and I am just as beautiful as such and such is.”

When I go out to the grocery store, not wearing makeup, probably wearing old cut up jeans that have paint on them, I don’t get hit on. No one tells me I’m beautiful. But I step outside of my hotel room and suddenly I have young teenage girls telling me how they wish they looked like me and how they don’t feel pretty enough to cosplay.

I’m telling the truth when I say, “I’m wearing a lot of makeup.”

God I get this too. So badly.

I’m a dude, and makeup for cosplay gives me confidence. I literally am not joking when I say that I probably own more makeup than your average high school girl.

It’s ironic, even. The exact things I get compliments for here on tumblr and at conventions, are the exact things I was bullied for at school and my entire life, which is, essentially, my face and body structure. I’m disproportionate (which causes a lot of difficulties in finding clothes and patterns that will fit me). I look incredibly feminine, and have really, REALLY terrible acne. But I’m still confident in cosplay, because I can cover it all up and still feel attractive.

There is no reason to be ashamed of wearing makeup for cosplay, if anything, I wouldn’t be brave enough to cosplay without wearing lots of makeup.

And then he was stumbling forward, falling more than running, really, closing his eyes and shoving the dagger blindly out before him with both hands. He heard a crack, like the sound ice makes when it breaks beneath a man’s foot, and then a screech so shrill and sharp that he went staggering backward with his hands over his muffled ears, and fell hard on his arse.

When he opened his eyes the Other’s armor was running down its legs in rivulets as pale blue blood hissed and steamed around the black dragonglass dagger in its throat. It reached down with two bone-white hands to pull out the knife, but where its fingers touched the obsidian they smoked.

Sam rolled onto his side, eyes wide as the Other shrank and puddled, dissolving away. In twenty heartbeats its flesh was gone, swirling away in a fine white mist. Beneath were bones like milkglass, pale and shiny, and they were melting too.Finally only the dragonglass dagger remained, wreathed in steam as if it were alive and sweating.
